Big Idea:  Chasing popularity as a treasure usually produces jealousy as the result.

“You must not covet your neighbor’s house. You must not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.” – Exodus 20:17

We immediately become discontent when we compare ourselves with other people.

1. God is a God of second chances

“The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time.” – Jonah 3:1


2. God expects timely obedience

“Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim the message I give you.” – Jonah 3:2

“Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord.”  – Jonah 3:3

“On the first day, Jonah started into the city.” – Jonah 3:4

In order to fully obey God, we’ve got to fully abandon ourselves.


3. God always responds to true repentance

“The Ninevites believed God.” – Jonah 3:5

“When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, he took off his royal robes, and he covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust.” – Jonah 3:6

“By the decree of the king and his nobles:  Do not let any man or beast or herd or flock taste anything; do not let them even eat or drink.” – Jonah 3:7

1.  Be quick to call on God

“From inside the fish, Jonah prayed to the Lord his God.” – Jonah 2:1

“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” – Hebrews 4:16

2.  Be honest about the reality of your situation

3.  Believe that God is with you in your darkness

“God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’” – Hebrews 13:5

“When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, O Lord, and my prayer rose to your holy temple.” – Jonah 2:7

“Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs.” – Jonah 2:8

“What I have vowed I will make good.” – Jonah 2:9

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast.” – Ephesians 2:8-9

Whether you are on top of the world or in the depths of hell, when you call on the Lord, He will answer you.Read the rest

When God looks at the center of the universe, he doesn’t look at you.
