Gospel Shaped Sexuality – Week 6

6 – Consequential Love

Big Idea: It doesn’t matter so much your intentions when you start but the reality of your life when you end.

The decisions you are making today do determine your tomorrows.

“For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. So Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and did not wholly follow the Lord, as David his father had done. Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, and for Molech the abomination of the Ammonites, on the mountain east of Jerusalem.” (1 Kings 11:5-7)

“And the Lord was angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods.Read the rest

5 – Thinking About Your Future

  1. Small Picture = NOW
  2. Big Picture = FUTURE

“Only fools say in their hearts, ‘There is no God.’” (Psalm 14:1)

“Nothing in all creation is hidden from God.  Everything is naked and exposed before His eyes, and He is the one to whom we are accountable.” (Hebrews 4:13)

“They knew God, but they wouldn’t worship Him as God or even give Him thanks.  They began to think of foolish ideas of what God was like.  As a result, their minds became dark and confused, claiming to be wise [as so many people in here are doing], they instead became utter fools. Read the rest

Gospel Shaped Sexuality – Week 5

5 – Committed Love

We are all in relationships, but there is no one on earth who can meet all your needs or give you the intimacy we desire.

1.  If you think something good, say it.

“How beautiful are your feet in sandals, O noble daughter! Your rounded thighs are like jewels, the work of a master hand. Your navel is a rounded bowl that never lacks mixed wine. Your belly is a heap of wheat, encircled with lilies. Your two breasts are like two fawns, twins of a gazelle.” (Song of Solomon 7:1-3)

“Your head crowns you like Carmel, and your flowing locks are like purple; a king is held captive in the tresses.” (Song of Solomon 7:5)

“Your stature is like a palm tree, and your breasts are like its clusters.Read the rest

4 – Living in a Fantasy World

“But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” (James 1:14-15)

“You shall be holy, for I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:16)

“For years, years, years, my dirty little secret was that I was addicted to pornography.  It really, really messed up my life in a lot of ways. Every man out there desires intimacy. Every time you look at pornography, it’s a desire for intimacy. You are trying to fight your feelings of being alone by filling it with pornography in an attempt to feel like you are with someone and you know someone.Read the rest

Gospel Shaped Sexuality – Week 4

4 – Resolving Conflict

“I slept, but my heart was awake. A sound! My beloved is knocking. “Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my perfect one, for my head is wet with dew, my locks with the drops of the night…I had put off my garment; how could I put it on? I had bathed my feet; how could I soil them?” (Song of Solomon 5:2-3)

The Root Causes of Conflict:

  1. Unmet expectations
  2. Self- Centeredness

“My beloved put his hand to the latch, and my heart was thrilled within me. I arose to open to my beloved, and my hands dripped with myrrh, my fingers with liquid myrrh, on the handles of the bolt. Read the rest

2 – Relational Pursuit

1.  Relational preparation must come before relational pursuit.

“… For behold, the winter is past; the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land.” (Song of Solomon 2:11-12)

2.  Relational practice understands Godly pursuit.

“The voice of my beloved! Behold, he comes, leaping over the mountains, bounding over the hills. My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag. Behold, there he stands behind our wall, gazing through the windows, looking through the lattice.Read the rest

2 – Image Isn’t Everything

Messages from culture…

1.  Sex before marriage is normal.

“He [Adam] gave names to all the livestock, birds, and wild animals.  But still there was no companion suitable for him.  He’s naming all these animals and then God says, “There’s no companion for you.  Let’s create one.”  “So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, He took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the place with flesh.  Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib He had taken out of the man, and He brought her to the man. Read the rest

1 – Attraction by Design

Attraction is a powerful force.

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” 19 So the Lord God formed from the ground all the wild animals and all the birds of the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would call them, and the man chose a name for each one. 20 He gave names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky, and all the wild animals.Read the rest

Gospel Shaped Sexuality – Week 1

Gospel Shaped Sexuality

1 – Magnetic Attraction

1.  Godly Character

“The Song of Songs, which is Solomon’s. [SHE] Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth! For your love is better than wine; your anointing oils are fragrant; your name is oil poured out; therefore virgins love you.” (Song of Solomon 1:1-3)

Reputation is what others think you are.  Character is who you really are.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)

2.  Growing Trust

“I am very dark, but lovely, O daughters of Jerusalem, like the tents of Kedar, like the curtains of Solomon.Read the rest

4 – Cutting Loose Control

1/30/19 (HS)

Theme verse“Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” (Romans 8:17-18)

“In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. Read the rest
