Before You Say “I Do”
2 – Pursuit Empowers
“If you want to date well, keep a big, sacred, breathtaking picture of marriage in front of you. Think about your last first date.” (Twitter quote)
1st commitment: commit to pursue God as your one while preparing for your two.
Big Idea: By nature, we pursue what we don’t have.
2nd commitment:I commit to always pursue my two.
“That is why a man leaves his father and mother, and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.” (Genesis 2:24)
See story of Jacob and Rachel in Genesis 29…
1. When you think something good, say it.
“But exhort [encourage] one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.” (Hebrews 3:13)
“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” (Ephesians 4:29)
- When you think something special, do it.
“So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” (James 4:17)
- When you want something different, be it.
“Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.” (Matthew 7:3-5)
If you don’t like what you’re getting, look at what you’re giving.
