How to Raise Your Parents
1 – Making Radical Changes
1. God created families.
2. God uses family to communicate our role in His family.
“So now Jesus, and the ones He makes holy have the same father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them his brothers and sisters.” – Hebrews 2:11
3. God has given guidelines for families.
“I will obey your teaching forever and ever. I will live in freedom.” – Psalm 119:44
1. Realize that a healthy family brings life.
“Children obey your parents the way the Lord wants. This is the right thing to do. The command said, ‘Honor your father and mother. This is the first commandment that has a promise with it.” – Ephesians 6:1-2
2. Realize that you can’t control your family.
“You must love the Lord your God with all your heart and your soul and all your mind and all your strength. What’s the greatest commandment? Love God. That’s it. The second is equally important. Love your neighbor as yourself. No other commandment is greater than these.” – Mark 12:30-31
3. Realize that you can control your attitude.
1 – Talk about your family for a minute – what is good and what is not so good?
2 – How do you typically view your parents? What shapes how you typically relate to them?
3 – What are some current places where there is pain in your relationship with your parents?
4 – How does starting from a place of honor and respect help you in your relationship with your parents? What does that communicate to them?
5 – What are some radical changes you could make this week to help raise your parents?
