Key Scripture: “Don’t waste your energy striving for perishable food like that. Work for the food that sticks with you, food that nourishes your lasting life, food the Son of Man provides.” – John 6:27 (The Message)

“The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.” – Galatians 5:17

“For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God…” – 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5

Lust: a sexual desire that dishonors its object and disregards God.

“You have heard that the Law of Moses says, `Do not commit adultery.’  But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust in his eye has already committed adultery with her in his heart.  So if your eye – even if it is your good eye – causes you to lust, gouge it out and throw it away.  It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.  And if your hand – even if it is your stronger hand – causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away.  It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.”  – Matthew 5:27-30

For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” – 1 Samuel 16:7

The fight against lust will always begin and be won or lost in your mind and heart.

AVOID as much as is possible the sights and situations that arouse sinful desires.  I know some exposure to temptation is inevitable.  You know your weaknesses and what triggers them.

Say NO to every lustful thought within five seconds.  And say it with the authority of Jesus Christ. “In the name of Jesus, NO!”

TURN the mind forcefully toward Christ as a superior satisfaction. Saying “no” will not suffice. You must move from defense to offense.  Fight fire with fire.  Attack the promises of sin with the promises of Christ.

HOLD the promise and the pleasure of Christ firmly in your mind until it pushes the other images out. “Fix your eyes on Jesus” (Hebrews 12:2).

ENJOY a superior satisfaction.  You know the feeling when you give in to lust is temporary satisfaction followed by a flood of guilt.  Only Christ satisfies completely.

MOVE into a useful activity away from idleness and other vulnerable behaviors. Lust grows fast in the garden of inactivity. Find a good work to do, and do it with all your might. And do it for Jesus’s sake.

– What are some strategies you have found to battling impurity – specifically pornography?

– Can you see the real danger in taking in sexual impurity now – even if it seems everyone else is?  How can you see it damaging your future?
