Silly Love Songs: Week 4

Silly Love Songs
4 – All About That Bass

Key Scripture: “So God created people in his own image; God patterned them after himself; male and female He created them.”  Genesis 1:27

Your identity shapes your actions. What you believe determines how you behave.

“But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” – 1 Samuel 16:7

“Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes. You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God. This is how the holy women of old made themselves beautiful. They put their trust in God and accepted the authority of their husbands.” – 1 Peter 3:3-5

The Bible’s description of women: (found in Proverbs 31)

  1. Trustworthy

“An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life.” – Proverbs 31:10-12

  1. Serves humbly

“She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens. She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. She dresses herself with strengthand makes her arms strong. She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night. She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle. She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy.” – Proverbs 31:15-20

  1. Lives with integrity

“She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.” – Proverbs 31:26-29

  1. Fears the Lord

“Charm can mislead and beauty soon fades. The woman to be admired and praised is the woman who lives in the Fear-of-God.” – Proverbs 31:30

Discussion Questions:

  1. Where do you struggle with your sense of identity in culture today? What lies have you believed about your identity and sense of worth?
  2. Read 1 Samuel 16:7 and 1 Peter 3:3-5. How is this picture different than the one that is painted today about our sense of identity? Practically, how do we live these verses out in our lives?
  3. GIRLS: What characteristic(s) found in Proverbs 31 do you most closely resonate with? Which one(s) are harder for you? GUYS: The characteristics found in Proverbs 31 are what God says is important when looking for a relationship with a girl. Are these qualities you look for in a girl you are friends with and/or like? If not, why not? What might need to change in your heart/life to better care for your sisters in Christ?
